A few commenters on Twitter noticed the difference between the sizes of the hamburger steaks, the designs of the two cups, as well as the fact that the supposed mother character calls the other kid with their name properly (Hii-kun), but addresses the girl with "You" (あなた).

Hmm...
Aww, G-chan doesn't deserve that kind of treatment!

That just sounds like reaching to me. ("Where's the sadism?! There was supposed to be some soul-shattering sadism!!")
Look how small she is compared to the guy (who's already asking for seconds :D ), of course her portion is smaller. And calling your son's female friend and guest anata (あなた) (a rather familiar way to refer to someone in the second person) doesn't feel to me like a mark of impoliteness at all.
It's helpful G-chan. She's probably feeling extremely awkward after following the boy's parent around looking for some way to help only to be firmly sat down and now she can't even eat properly. That's actually quite common.

Whoa, that was not my intent at all! I don't read Japanese, so most f the nuance passed me by- I'd taken the comic as G-chan being sidelined in favour of a male sibling, and I wanted to say that she doesn't deserve that kind of treatment, especially after trying to be helpful. The possibility she was a guest with a lighter appetite never occurred to me at all.

No problem. And yeah, given your understanding, I see what you mean—that would be an awful way for a mother to treat her daughter.
I was just commenting in general on the (understandable) widespread assumption that there *must* be something dark in a Harumina Mau comic, while trying to sneak in a Marvin the Martian reference on the side. ;) (Yes, I'm dating myself. :)
She's wondering if there's anything she can do to help
←It's fine, you don't have to do anything, okay?Mom!
Seconds!Hii-kun, you still have some left on your plate, don't you?
