Any bets its the mother Yang has been searching for
The speculation train is at full steam everywhere that discusses RWBY. I'm leaning towards Summer Rose, though the red and black motif is common not only to Ruby, but also to the White Fang and Adam specifically, as well as Junior and his mooks. Still, I base my suspicion on the rose painted on the ceiling of the building where RWBY took shelter in Chapter 10, which was close to the design on Summer Rose's 'grave'. She also looked down at Yang for a while before leaving.
Other theories include: Yang's mom (also works with her staring at Yang), Adam, genderbent Adam, future Ruby, future Blake, just a new character that was never alluded to, and an evolved kind of Grimm (my earlier theory, based on her red eyes with black sclera and her 'human' eyes seeming to be really far apart under her mask), doubtless among many other theories.

Well, I can't accept it being Summer, since it's canon that she's dead. Yang's mother's the one that still's at large.
Is it really, absolutely, 100% confirmed to be canon that she's dead? Yang said in episode 6 she left on a mission and never came back. I figured it was more of a 'never found the body' situation than a definite death. The lyrics to Red Like Roses certainly favor the death interpretation, but 'This Will be the Day' also indicates 'they' think of 'you' (Ruby or the team?) as small and helpless, and that's never really come across.

Monty has stated that A) Summer Rose is dead. and B) the grave Ruby was standing over in her trailer and the opening, were both Summer's.
I wonder why no one thought that she might be related to Blake or Adam? Or is it too obvious?
Her weapon bears a significant similarity to Adam's 'Wilt and Blush,' what with the sheath of the sword being (I presume) the ranged weapon component. They also share mask-wearing and a color palette. Given she wears a Grimm mask like members of the White Fang, a connection to that group isn't much of a leap. So yeah, maybe too obvious...
