I'm honestly surprised that there aren't more jokes about the age of the Kongou class, considering the amount of age jokes there are about poor Houshou. I suppose it's just how their personalities are portrayed more than anything else.

Houshou was the first of her type (purpose-built carrier for full-size "standard" planes) as well, which doesn't help.
Remember all the Kongos and Fuso are over 100 years old. Also the Tenryu-class and Kuma-class are older than Houshou. As are some of the Nagara-class cruisers.
All the Japanese battleships aside from Yamato and Musashi are older than Houshou. She's young to them.

Probably because she does act like a "experience" lady

I've said before that given her very aggressive nature regarding the admiral and position as the oldest ship in the game I'm really surprised she didn't end up with a Christmas Cake depiction in fanon.

She's too energetic and young at heart for that. Plus, she and her sisters cover most of the character types the fans like. Poor Houshou is stuck being the mother of the fleet carriers, and her traditional Japanese housewife depictions make her immune to Christmas Cake syndrome.
Ashigara, by virtue of being dressed like an OL, and her Hungry Wolf lines, fits the Christmas Cake stereotypes perfectly.
Ashigara is basically a perfect storm of cakeness and insecurity. Kongou can be charisma broken by bringing up her age, but she can't be portrayed as such. Iowa's heart is too pure. If you managed to make her feel bad about her age, you'd wish you hadn't. It would be like convincing a child that Santa isn't real.
Her soul has been reborn as a shipgirl though. I think that maybe her soul left her body when she retired? It's like things have souls because they are being used. Her body is a tomb which people visit as a museum, but there's no crew and no real activity and thus no soul.

Presumably, regular maintenance and/or upgrades would prevent aging, though? After all, age is more defined by size than actual age in this series. Every refit may "reset" Iowa to her 20s.
Houshou was born 1922 (conceived 1920). She was scrapped in 1947. 47-22 = 25. Houshou is 25 years old!
If you count this way then Hibiki is probably the oldest of them a.. *hit by torpedo*
Hibiki was actually sunk as a target 1953, making her just under 21 years old from her launch date in 1932. Yukikaze (launched 1939) is probably the oldest of the post-war survivors, not including Iowa, at 31 when she was scrapped in 1970, although she was decommissioned in 1966. Kongou is still older, at just under 33, being around from 1912 to 1945.

Gangut now beats this total (1915 - 1956): 41 years old. She is also technically older than Kongou, having been laid down in 1909 and launched in 1911. If you count by launching, than she would be 45 years old, and the oldest ship in the game as of May 2017.

And as of 2021 still the oldest.
